Slavery in New York

New York has always been among the economically prosperous cities which has promoted and appreciated human enterprise. Strangely enough, before the abolition of slavery in America, New York could also be called the capital of American Slavery. It had held its status as the slave capital through almost two centuries. The New York Historical Society took an initiative in 2005, and started an exhibition on this unexplored chapters of New York's history. Slavery in New York, is that exhibition which explores a period between the 1600s till 1827, when slavery was formally abolished in the state of New York. Slavery in New York has exhibits from the New York Historical Society as well as from few reputed collections. The journey of the Africans and the African-Americans from being slaves to independent citizens of the United States have been depicted in this exhibition.


During the mid 15th Century, Europeans and Americans had made the Atlantic Ocean a hub of economic activities. Export and import of plantation crops and of slaves has made the ports situated along the Atlantic, few of the most prosperous ports in the world. This list included New York as well. The exhibition, Slavery in New York has also certain educative programs which it has undertaken to let the citizens know about the history of the city. The educational program at the Slavery in New York exhibition aims at introducing several new chapters in the curricula of local schools. Special tours are also conducted for students, to make them acquainted with the history of their city.



Besides these educational programs, the Slavery in New York exhibition also undertakes several public programs like lectures, debates and discussions, films, performances and even walking tours of the city, to broaden the perspective of the exhibition.
