Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, was established in 1994, with an aim to spread the love of American history among its people. The institute provides lessons for and helps teachers, students, and even the general public. The institute helps to create schools, which has the American history as their focal point. Several research centers, for conducting research on American history are also established by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Several seminars and refreshers courses are held annually, for the benefit of teachers. The institute is also involved in publishing printed and electronic books, magazines and newsletters on American history.


Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History also awards a prize, entitled, “history Teacher of the Year”, in each state in collaboration with Preserve America. Book Prizes like, Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and George Washington Book Prizes, are also awarded by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. The website maintained by the institute serves as a portal of American History, which offers educational materials for teachers as well as students.

The collection at the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, is one of its kind. Most of the collection at the institute has been derived from the contributions of the New York Historical Society. The institute has above 68,000 documents which gives an account of the social and political history of the United States. The historical collections at the institute include, letters, manuscripts, diaries, maps and photographs.



Printed pamphlets and books are also present in the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. All these documents usually date back to 1493. documents from the Revolutionary, Antebellum, Civil War and Reconstruction periods, dominate the collection at the institute. The collection of letters at the institute is quite commendable. Thousands of unsent letters by the soldiers of the civil war as well as letters written by eminent personalities like, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, enrich the collection at the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
